Ercie Lee Bell-Hill

March 10, 1934 - January 26, 2021

The Alford family mourns the loss of Ercie Lee Bell-Hill. Ercie was born in Boley, Oklahoma to Daniel & Viola Bell on March 10th, 1934. She passed away on January 26, 2021 at the age of 86.


The fear of the Lord was instilled in her at an early age. She attended Wichita Public Schools and later obtained her G.E.D. to further her education. She attended Wichita Central Vocational Technical School where she earned her certificate as a seamstress.


Later in life, she was employed by the once prestigious Shirkmere Hotel where she held an esteemed position as the first woman of color while remaining elegant and respectful, under racism and much ridicule. Ercie also worked for Brown's Grill where she enjoyed cooking and catering which she frequently boasted about providing extra meals for the Wichita State Athletes who she called "Her Boys".


Often Ercie was synonymous with Dorcas (Tabitha) from the bible because she was full of good works and deeds. She never faltered for any family member in need. She served as a companion aide for senior citizens for 21 years. Her compassion had no limits.


She is preceded in death by her son, Edwin Eugene; Parents, Daniel & Viola Bell; four brothers, Eddie Bell, Wesley Bell, Willard Bell and Winford Bell; Two sisters, Virta L. Alford and Wanda J. McClellan.


She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Edward, Debra (Gary) and Kim, all of Wichita, KS; 8 Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great-Grandchildren and a host of family and friends.


Ercie is the daughter of Daniel & Viola Bell; Granddaughter of Lucinda & Ivory Bell; and G/Granddaughter of Matthew Solomon Alford & Lucy Berry.
