Mourning William Ian Lewis

January 29, 1982 - December 23, 2022

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of William Ian Lewis. Born on January 29, 1982, William was smart, generous, funny and was well known for his contagious smile. Death by suicide is not a denial of life; it is the cry of despair for more life. It grows from deep personal alienation or profound suffering and is carried out alone, after a struggle within self. William will be a shining light forever in our hearts and remains a hero in our hearts.

William, a long-time resident of Oakland, California passed away on December 23, 2022, at the age of 40. He was an adored son and grandson to the village that raised him, parents Sharon & Edmond Brown and Michael & Pamela Lewis; and grandmother of Doris Robertson. He touched many lives as a devoted grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend during his time with us.

William served his country as a United States Army veteran. After his years of service, he worked as a skilled technician, mechanic, and engineer. He served others as a compassionate caregiver and civic minded community member. William cherished both of his grandmothers and shared a special bond with them. He was a devoted friend to many and enjoyed socializing with his large circle of companions. All who knew him were captured by his intellect, humor, captivating spirit, and magnetic smile. He had a love for video games, movies, and planes. His infectious laugh, sharp wit and contagious humor will be deeply missed and cherished by all those who loved him.

With a strong Alford lineage, William was son of Sharon Brown; Grandson of Nyla Jewel Weldon; Great-Grandson of Beatrice Jennings-Weldon; Great-Great-Grandson of Effie Alford-Jennings, and Great-Great-Great-Grandson of Matthew Solomon Alford.

A Celebration of Life was held in William’s honor on March 10, 2023, at Fouche’s Hudson Funeral Home in Oakland, California.
